Physical inactivity is a major health risk for many children. Elementary school children are recommended to engage in a least 30 minutes of exercise each day, yet many fall far short! The Family Fitness Challenge encourages children (kindergarten through sixth grade) to set fitness goals and report on their success. It is customized to children's likes and dislikes, their ages and their abilities.
Objective
Whether you are a parent or a teacher, you can support Physical Education by encouraging your students to participate in the Family Fitness Challenge. This program was developed to compliment what the children are learning in their PE classes. The Family Fitness Challenge can be an organized school event, or a program completed within an individual household. A point system has been created for the children to follow where they receive points for various exercises and activities performed at home or school under adult supervision. Please print out a checklist provided for you on these pages for the children to complete during their participation in the program. It is up to you whether you want to designate a specific period of time to reach their goal, or no time limit at all. Once the child reaches their goal, print up a certificate for them.
When Can The Children Exercise?
One point will be awarded for:
They
should meet the point total below listed for their grade. It is up
to the participants to decide if a time limit should be applicable.

Once
a child reaches their goal (points), start over again. You may want
to raise the point total the next time to create a challenge.
For children with special needs and physical challenges, the exercises and point systems can be revised at your discretion. |
